Wakeeney Speedway Returns to Action

By Mike Hughes

WAKEENEY, KS (May 5)—Racing action returned to Wakeeney (KS) Speedway Sunday evening, May 5, with over 80 race teams in competition.

After finishing second to older brother Travis Saturday night at RPM Speedway in Hays, KS, ‘Dynamite’ Dylan Sherfick redeemed himself to pick up the IMCA Modified feature win at his hometown track Sunday night.  John Fose led the first 3 laps before Troy Plummer assumed command.  After a caution on lap 9, Dylan took the lead on the restart and held the lead the second half of the race for a trip to victory lane.  Plummer was second, with Mike Petersilie edging out heat one winner Fose for third.  Brian Calhoon rounded out the top five.  Dylan Sherfick and Plummer won the other two heat races.

‘The Z Man’ Mark Zorn led the first 8 laps of the 20-lap IMCA Stock Car feature before the caution waved for a stalled car.  After the restart, Selden’s Jason Rogers passed Zorn and drove on for the win.  Jeff Tubbs finished in the runner-up spot, followed by Dalton Bauer, B.J. Wagoner, and heat two winner Zorn.  Eric Kinderknecht won the other heat race.

Colby’s Dustin Daniels took the lead from Mike Appel on lap 5 of the 15-lap IMCA Northern Sport Mod feature and drove away for a trip to the winner’s circle.  Clay Money kept Daniels in sight but had to settle for second.  Appel, ‘The Frye Man’ Tyler Frye, and ‘Wild’ Willie Wynn completed the top five.  Heat race victors were Chris Heim, Blaine Walt, and Daniels.

Polesitter Roger Garrison led the opening lap in the 15-lap IMCA Hobby Stock main event before Tommy Fose took over the top spot.  Fose led the field to the halfway mark, but was passed by Goodland’s Eric Ross the following lap.  Ross held on for the win, with Fose edging out ‘Bam Bam’ Cody Graham by inches for second.  ‘Neon’ Leon Pfannenstiel and Jeromy Wagner finished fourth and fifth.  Garrison, Josh Hrabe, and Brian Stich won the three heat races.

The Kansas Antique Racers were also on hand.

The evening’s races were sponsored by Quinter Auto Parts in Quinter and Dreher Automotive in Wakeeney, the area Bumper to Bumper Auto Parts stores.

Racing returns to the 3/8-mile oval for a two-day show Memorial weekend.  The regular four classes will compete for extra prize money on Sunday evening, May 26.  Sunday evening they will also be joined by the URSS 305 Sprint Cars.  The regular four divisions return on Monday evening, May 27, with extra prize money again on the line.  Race time both nights is 6:00 p.m.

Wakeeney Speedway opens regular season

By Mike Hughes

WAKEENEY, KS (April 28)—Wakeeney (KS) Speedway got in their first regular season show on Sunday evening, April 28.

The IMCA Hobby Stock feature got off to a rough start as cars were 5 wide coming out of turn 2 on the opening lap.  Brian Stich got caught on the outside with no where to go and went off the back and rolled.  He was okay but done for the night.  On the restart, outside polesitter Daniel Irwin of Hays took the lead at the drop of the green and held off the remaining 20 cars for the 15-lap event to make his way to the winner’s circle, the first time Irwin has been there in his career.  Heat one winner Cody Ghumm finished second, followed by Jeromy Wagner, Kirk Karst, and third heat winner ‘Neon’ Leon Pfannenstiel.  ‘Bam Bam’ Cody Graham also won a heat race.

Penokee’s Clay Money took advantage of starting on the pole and took a lead he would not relinquish in a caution filled 15-lap IMCA Northern Sport Mod feature.  Several cautions kept the field bunched up, but each time, Money was up for the occasion and made his way to the Jason Oil winner’s circle.  Chris Heim, Daniel Gottschalk, Willie Wynn and Brenden Damon rounded out the top five.  Heat race winners were Heim, Wynn, Josh Appel, and Money.

‘Sweet’ Wheat Lippelmann led all 20 laps of the IMCA Stock Car feature.  Three caution flags kept the field close as several drivers challenged Lippelmann.  But at the checkers, Lippelmann was first, trailed by Tyrel Smith, Jason Davis, ‘Spiderman’ Nick Tubbs and Jason Rogers.  Nick Tubbs, Dalton Bauer and Jeff Tubbs were victorious in the three heat races.

Ryan Heger of Hugoton took the lead on lap 4 from early leader Tim Watts in the 20-lap IMCA Modified feature.  Heger was able to keep Watts at bay for a trip to victory lane, with Shannon Maughlin, Troy Plummer and Brian Calhoon completing the top five.  Heger, John Fose, and Plummer won their respective heat races.

The regular four classes return to action on Sunday, May 5, and will be joined by the vintage cars.  The green flag will fly at 6:30 p.m.
